What Causes Uneven Tyre Wear? Signs Your Car Needs Attention

Your tyres won’t stay new forever, but they should generally wear at a relatively even rate. If one tyre is wearing faster than the others or you notice significantly more wear on one side of the tread, your car may be telling you something needs attention.

Uneven tyre wear can reduce the lifespan of your tyres and may point to problems with tyre pressure, wheel alignment, suspension, or other components.

Knowing what to look for can help you catch the problem before it gets worse.

1. Incorrect Tyre Pressure

One of the simplest causes of uneven tyre wear is incorrect tyre pressure.

Driving with tyres that are consistently underinflated or overinflated can change the way the tread contacts the road.

Underinflated tyres may experience greater wear toward the outer edges, while overinflation can contribute to increased wear around the centre of the tread.

Check your tyre pressure regularly and use the pressure recommended by your vehicle manufacturer rather than relying on how the tyres look.

2. Poor Wheel Alignment

Wheel alignment determines how your wheels sit in relation to the road and each other.

When the alignment is incorrect, parts of the tyre can experience more contact and friction than they should. Over time, this can create noticeably uneven tread wear.

Other signs of an alignment problem may include your car pulling to one side or the steering wheel sitting off-centre when you’re driving straight.

Potholes, kerbs, and everyday wear can all contribute to alignment problems.

3. Worn Suspension Components

Your suspension system helps keep your tyres firmly and evenly in contact with the road.

When suspension components become worn or damaged, the way a tyre contacts the road can change. This may result in unusual or inconsistent tread wear.

Depending on the problem, you might also notice knocking or clunking noises, changes in handling, excessive bouncing, or vibration through the steering wheel.

4. Your Wheels Are Out of Balance

Your wheels and tyres need to rotate smoothly at speed. If a wheel is out of balance, it can create vibration and contribute to irregular tyre wear over time.

One of the most noticeable signs is vibration through the steering wheel, particularly at certain speeds.

Wheel balancing can help ensure weight is distributed correctly around the wheel and tyre assembly.

5. Your Tyres Haven’t Been Rotated

Depending on the vehicle, tyres in different positions can wear at different rates.

Regular tyre rotation can help distribute wear more evenly and extend the usable life of a set of tyres. However, not every tyre or vehicle setup allows for the same rotation pattern, so the manufacturer’s recommendations should be followed.

If some tyres are significantly more worn than others, their position on the vehicle may be part of the reason.

6. A Tyre or Wheel Has Been Damaged

Hitting a pothole, kerb, or road debris can damage a tyre or wheel and potentially affect alignment or suspension components.

Sometimes the problem is obvious. Other times, the first thing you notice is unusual tyre wear, vibration, or a change in the way the car handles.

If you’ve recently had a hard impact and something feels different afterward, it’s worth having the vehicle inspected.

What Does Uneven Tyre Wear Look Like?

You don’t need to be a mechanic to spot some of the warning signs.

When checking your tyres, look for:

  • One edge of the tyre wearing faster than the other
  • Excessive wear through the centre of the tread
  • Greater wear along both outer edges
  • Irregular patches of wear around the tyre
  • One tyre looking significantly more worn than the others
  • Changes in tread depth across the surface of the tyre

You may also notice changes while driving, such as pulling to one side, vibration through the steering wheel, or handling that doesn’t feel quite right.

Why You Shouldn’t Ignore Uneven Tyre Wear

Replacing the tyre may address the immediate wear, but it won’t necessarily fix what caused it.

If poor alignment, incorrect tyre pressure, worn suspension components, or another mechanical issue is responsible, a replacement tyre may begin wearing unevenly as well.

Identifying the underlying problem can help protect your tyres and keep your vehicle handling as it should.
